Dwayne Peaslee Technical Training Center Receives Gifts from Lawrence, Kansas Foundations to Fund New Training Programs

LAWRENCE – The Ethel and Raymond F. Rice Foundation donated $55,000 and the Kriz Charitable Fund, Inc. donated $50,000 for the development of facilities maintenance and plumbing training programs at the Dwayne Peaslee Technical Training Center (Peaslee Tech).

“These wonderful gifts will change the lives of people in Lawrence and Douglas County by providing training for much needed, high wage jobs,” said Shirley Martin-Smith, President of Peaslee Tech’s Board of Directors.

The Ethel and Raymond F. Rice Foundation was incorporated on Feb. 11, 1972, as a private charitable foundation, with the stated purpose of distributing funds to charitable organizations and educational charities and institutions. Raymond formed the foundation after his wife, Ethel, died to extend his philanthropic interests past his lifetime. Raymond was a legal scholar and highly distinguished long-time Lawrence practicing lawyer.

The Kriz Charitable Fund, Inc. was incorporated on August 6th, 1996 by Laura M. Kriz, a retiree who lived in Lawrence until her death in 1999. The fund is managed by a five-member board. Laura was a successful business woman in Chicago who upon retirement moved to Lawrence with her brother Ed. Ed and Laura lived in the house directly south of the Castle Tea Room.

Located at 2920 Haskell Avenue, the Peaslee Tech’s mission is to be a catalyst for economic growth by providing access to technical training to a diverse community of learners to meet the current and emerging needs of our communities and employers. Peaslee Tech offers a wide range of technical and technology courses.

LAWRENCE ROBOTICS TEAM EARNS JUDGE’S AWARD AT REGIONAL COMPETITION

Elementary and middle school students from Level Up Robots in Lawrence, Kan. took 4th place overall and brought home the Judge’s Award in the TCALC Vex Spin Up Blended Tournament, held February 18 at the Topeka Center for Advanced Learning and Careers. The team, made up of four students in 5th through 8th grades, competed in a field that included 25 high school and eight middle school teams from across Kansas.
