Lawrence Habitat helping senior homeowners

Lawrence— April 9, 2021

Lawrence Habitat for Humanity’s Aging in Place program provides home repair for senior homeowners who are financially and/or physically unable to make the changes on their own.  While completing projects all around the city, a common need kept presenting itself over and over – gutter cleaning.  In response, on Saturday, April 10, 2021, Lawrence Habitat will launch a pilot program, the “Inaugural Spring Spruce Up Day,” in which 30 volunteers will clean gutters and rake for 17 senior homeowners in our community.  This year’s program was open to current Aging in Place participants.

“Cleaning gutters is an important home maintenance task, eliminating future repairs caused by water damage.  Seniors shouldn’t be on ladders cleaning gutters, so we are happy to partner with them to help,” said Erin Schmidt, coordinator of the program.

Lawrence Habitat’s Aging in Place program is open to seniors, 55+ years old, who own and reside in the home and have an income less that 80% of the median family income for this area.  Typical Aging in Place repair projects include building ramps and handrails, porch repair, gutter and soffit repair, siding repair, exterior house painting, roof work and interior accessibility.  Projects are selected based on need, willingness of the homeowner to partner with Habitat and Habitat’s ability to complete the repair.
